Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an incurable neurodegenerative disease that results in deficits in physical and cognitive function, and often fosters low levels of self-efficacy for physical activity, motivation for physical activity, and quality of life [1]. Drug therapies, physical therapy rehabilitation, and lifestyle modifications such as increased physical activity are standard protocol for symptom management, yet persons with MS tend to be physically inactive [2,3]. Additionally, single-moda…

Walking for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) degrades during motor-cognitive interplay (i.e., dual task conditions). Declining gait mechanics and turning ability result in more frequent falls and an interruption of daily activities in persons with PD.To determine the impact of dual-tasking on key mobility elements during a walking task in people with PD with 2D motion analysis.Participants performed Timed Up and Go (TUG) single, dual task conditions (TUG, TUG, and TUG). 2D motion analysis…

Grignard reagents undergo conjugate addition to thiochromones catalyzed by copper salts to afford 2-substituted-thiochroman-4-ones, both 2-alkylthiochroman-4-ones and thioflavanones (2-arylthiochroman-4-ones), in good yields with trimethylsilyl chloride (TMSCl) as an additive. The best yields of 1,4-adducts can be attained with CuCN∙2LiCl as the copper source. Excellent yields of 2-alkyl-substituted thiochroman-4-ones and thioflavanones (2-aryl substituted) are attained with a broad range of …

Rotationally resolved electronic spectra of two conformational isomers of jet-cooled indole-4-carboxylic acid (I4CA) and the deuterated forms of the acid (-COOD) and amide (-ND) groups have been obtained using a UV laser/molecular beam spectrometer. The in-plane orientation of the acid group defines the two lowest energy rotamers of I4CA. The S ← S origin bands of the two rotamers and four isotopologues have been fit to asymmetric rotor Hamiltonians in both electronic states. From the best-fi…

Adults living in rural areas are at greater risk of becoming overweight and obese due to health care disparities. A pre-/postmatched cohort design was used to evaluate a brief weight-loss counseling intervention, Ten Top Tips (10TT), in a rural primary care setting. The rank sum scores for total weight-loss behaviors and the subscales for dietary changes, self-monitoring, physical activity, and psychological coping taken before and 12 weeks after the intervention differed significantly (P = .…

Poor diabetes self-management practices may lead to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which, if left untreated, can progress to end stage renal disease (ESRD). Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of ESRD for adults. Improving diabetes self-management practices is an important strategy to decrease the risk of developing CKD.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids are vital for optimal fetal neuronal development. The relationship between maternal alcohol consumption and smoking with third trimester plasma fatty acids were examined and their association with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Moderate to heavy alcohol-using and low/unexposed comparison women were recruited during mid-pregnancy from two prenatal clinics in Ukraine. The participants' infants underwent physical and neurobehavioral exams prior to one-year o…
