E- and Z-guggulsterones and nine guggulsterone derivatives (GSDs) were synthesized and evaluated for their preferential cytotoxicity against human PANC-1 cell in nutrient deprived medium utilizing antiausterity strategy. Among the synthesized compounds, GSD-1 and GSD-7 showed potent cytotoxicity against PANC-1 cells under nutrient-deprived conditions in a concentration dependent manner, with a PC value of 1.6 μM and 3.2 μM, respectively. The effect of GSD-1 and GSD-7 was further evaluated in …

Transient abnormal myelopoiesis (TAM) is a unique myeloproliferative disorder that occurs in neonates with constitutional trisomy 21/Down syndrome (DS). Although TAM also develops in neonates without constitutional trisomy 21, the clinical, cytogenetic, and molecular characteristics of those patients are not fully understood. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical and cytogenetic findings and GATA1 mutation status of 17 neonates with TAM and nonconstitutional trisomy 21 tested for GATA1 mut…

Intracranial arterial dissection is a major cause of ischemic stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage in relatively young patients. We assessed the hypothesis that the tortuosity of the vertebrobasilar artery is associated with the occurrence of vertebral artery (VA) dissection, using MR angiography (MRA).This study enrolled 43 patients with VA dissection, and 63 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were used as the controls. MRA was employed to evaluate the presence of dominant VA and the latera…

Recently, a novel 22-gauge needle with three symmetric needle points and crown-shaped cutting heels, known as a Franseen needle, has been developed for endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy (EUS-FNB).To assess the histological material acquisition rate and histological diagnostic capability of the 22-gauge Franseen needle (AC22) during EUS-FNB for solid lesions. This study was designed as an open-label, multicenter, prospective, single-arm pilot study of EUS-FNB using AC22 for the di…

We examined whether a contact lens sensor (CLS) is useful for the postoperative evaluation of trabectome surgery. We investigated the correlations between the outcomes of trabectome surgery and the output of a CLS.We examined 24 consecutive eyes of patients with pseudo-exfoliation glaucoma. In each eye, the intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuations over 24 h were measured with the SENSIMED Triggerfish CLS before and at 3 months after the trabectome surgery. We divided the patients into success …

Neonicotinoids (NNs), a widely used class of systemic pesticides, are regarded as exhibiting selective toxicity in insects. However, NNs are suspected of exerting adverse effects on mammals as well, including humans. To date, only adult male animal models have been subjected to general toxicity studies of NNs; fetuses have yet to be considered in this context. Here, we focused on the NN clothianidin (CLO) for the first quantitative LC-MS/MS analysis of maternal-to-fetal transfer and residual …

PURPOSE This study evaluated the continuous use of trastuzumab beyond progression (TBP) in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction (G/GEJ) cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with HER2-positive advanced G/GEJ cancer refractory to first-line chemotherapy with trastuzumab in combination with fluoropyrimidine and platinum were eligible. Patients were randomly assigned to the paclitaxel (80 mg/m2, days 1, 8, and 15, every 4 weeks) o…

Three new steroidal saponins, aspiletreins A-C (1-3), together with 2H-chromen-2-one (4), and α-tocopherol (5), were isolated from whole Aspidistra letreae plants collected in Vietnam. Their structures were elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic analyses, including 1D- and 2D-NMR, IR, and HRESIMS, and by comparison with the reported data in the literature. Compounds 1-3 exhibited moderate cytotoxicities against the LU-1, HeLa, MDA-MB-231, HepG2, and MKN-7 human cancer cell lines, with I…

We encountered a 42-year-old woman with a history of diabetes mellitus and cataracts presenting with repeated syncope whose electrocardiogram showed advanced atrioventricular block. On admission, we excluded major potential differential diagnoses as causes of an atrioventricular block but did not suspect myotonic dystrophy, which was eventually diagnosed by chance based on a suspected weakness of the respiratory muscles followed by a detailed neurological physical examination. Myotonic dystro…

We analyzed the underlying principles of an unmodulated very-low-voltage (VLV) mode, designated as "soft coagulation" in hemostasis, and demonstrate its clinical applications. . While the advantage of the VLV mode has been reported across surgical specialties, the basic principle has not been well described and remains ambiguous. . Characteristics of major electrosurgical modes were measured in different settings. For the VLV mode, the tissue effect and electrical parameters were assessed in …
