Advances in sensing technology raise the possibility of creating neural interfaces that can more effectively restore or repair neural function and reveal fundamental properties of neural information processing. To realize the potential of these bioelectronic devices, it is necessary to understand the capabilities of emerging technologies and identify the best strategies to translate these technologies into products and therapies that will improve the lives of patients with neurological and ot…

Transverse plane shear stress between the prosthetic socket and residual limb often results in soft tissue breakdown and discomfort for individuals with lower-limb amputation. To better understand the effects of reduced transverse plane stiffness in the shank of a prosthesis, a second-generation variable stiffness torsion adapter (VSTA II) was tested with individuals with a transtibial amputation (n = 10). Peak transverse plane moments, VSTA II deflection, range of whole body angular momentum…

C-Nucleosides are characterized by a C-C rather than a C-N linkage between the heterocyclic base and the ribofuranose ring. While the biosynthesis of pseudouridine-C-nucleosides has been studied, less is known about the pyrazole-C-nucleosides such as the formycins and pyrazofurin. Herein, genome screening of Streptomyces candidus NRRL 3601 led to the discovery of the pyrazofurin biosynthetic gene cluster pyf. In vitro characterization of gene product PyfQ demonstrated that it is able to catal…

We report a new approach for nanosilicon-graphene hybrids with uniquely stable solid electrolyte interphase. Expanded graphite is gently exfoliated creating "defect-free" graphene that is non-catalytic towards electrolyte decomposition, simultaneously introducing high mass loading (48 wt. %) Si nanoparticles. Silane surface treatment creates epoxy chemical tethers, mechanically binding nano-Si to CMC binder through epoxy ring-opening reaction while stabilizing the Si surface chemistry. Epoxy-…

This study examines the relationships between self-reported exposure to smokeless tobacco marketing and initiation/onset of smokeless tobacco use/susceptibility at 6-month follow-up, among a cohort of young adults in urban Texas.Participants were 3597 18-25 year old never smokeless tobacco users, attending 24 Texas two-year colleges and four-year universities. A multi-level, multivariate logistic regression model, accounting for school clustering, examined the impact of self-reported recall o…

Physical inactivity is highly prevalent in Latinos. Use of smartphone technology may improve physical activity (PA) among Latino adults. We sought to determine the efficacy of a multi-component intervention to promote PA among Latino adults. We conducted a 3-month, 2-arm randomized trial among Latino adults with one or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We adapted a scripted, counseling approach into text messages and combined this intervention with brief motivational intervi…

Due to the unipolar conduction mechanism, the switching loss of silicon carbide (SiC) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (mosfet) is reduced significantly when compared with silicon insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). This enables the use of SiC mosfet in high-frequency application. However, the switching loss could still thermally limit the upper limit of the switching frequency. Further reduction of switching loss of SiC mosfet, therefore, remains an open challenge for …

Growing electric power demand in densely populated metropolitan areas presents problems due to the lack of availability of space to build transmission lines and due to short-circuit current limits. One of the solutions to meet the increasing demand is high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables, which have a sufficiently high capacity and can be installed in the limited space of existing ducts. However, since the characteristics of low-impedance HTS cables result in higher system short-circ…

This research examined couples' marital affect as a mediator between the couples' combined attachment representations (assessed prenatally) and each of their caregiving quality at 8 months postpartum. We followed 125 couples pregnant with their first child over the transition to parenthood. Prenatally, the Adult Attachment Interview was administered and marital interactions were observed. Parents were categorized in joint attachment pairs: secure/secure, secure mother/insecure father, secure …

The association between cigarette use and depression has been documented in many studies. Fewer studies have examined other tobacco products such as electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and hookah that are used by young adults. This study examined whether increased frequency of use of these products was associated with depressive symptoms in a cohort of n = 5236 Texas college students followed from 2014 to 2017. To analyze the longitudinal data, a hierarchical model was used. Model results sh…
