Skeletal muscle atrophy is a serious health condition that can arise due to aging, cancer, corticosteroid exposure, and denervation. Previous work comparing gene expression profiles in control and denervated muscle tissue revealed for the first time that Fam83d is expressed in skeletal muscle and is significantly induced in response to denervation. Quantitative PCR and Western blot analysis found that Fam83d is more highly expressed in proliferating myoblasts compared to differentiated myotub…

Recent sociological research has addressed a wide range of attitudinal, behavioral, and sociodemographic factors that influence attitudes toward legal abortion. Young adulthood is an important life stage for the development of attitudes and behaviors that are likely to influence individuals over time. Several life course theorists in psychology, social psychology, and sociology hold views consistent with this idea. We use a cohort comparison to evaluate the extent to which attitudes among you…

Background: Employers consider strong leadership skills among highly desirable qualities for new hires. To meet the needs of today’s complex workforce, colleges and universities have increased opportunities for experiential learning for students. However, it is not known how students make meaning of these experiences in context with their personal backgrounds and experiences. Purpose: This study examines how women and men in college make meaning of leadership and leaders through experiential …

The purpose of this research was to examine college students’ conceptions of learning computer science and approaches to learning computer science and to examine the relationships among these two important constructs and possible moderating factors. Student data ( N = 193) were collected using the conceptions of learning computer science and the approaches to learning computer science surveys at one public research institution in the southeastern United States. Data were analyzed with descrip…

The existing research on inmate visitation disproportionately focuses on the social ties between mother and child within a traditional face-to-face engagement at state prisons. This overreliance on a certain type of visit has limited empirical assessments of the visitation process. The current study features a purposive sample of 47 ( n = 47) visitors to a remote visitation center linked to a county jail. Qualitative responses indicate that respondents held positive perceptions of staff and t…

Protein phosphatase methylesterase 1 has been identified as a novel gene in skeletal muscle that is upregulated in response to neurogenic atrophy in mice. Western blot analysis confirms that Ppme1 is expressed during both muscle cell proliferation and differentiation. Additionally, the Ppme1 promoter is active in muscle cells, while mutation of a conserved E-box element prevents full induction of the Ppme1 reporter gene, suggesting that Ppme1 is transcriptionally regulated by myogenic regulat…

This study examines Muslim women’s purchasing behaviors toward modest activewear in the United States and tests the underlying mechanism of intent to purchase activewear, based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB). A sample of veiled Muslim women ( N = 328) participated in this study. Results from structural equation modeling revealed that perceived aesthetic attributes and compatibility with regard to apparel functionality, expressiveness, and aesthetics are significant predictors of atti…

Murray Sidman's contributions to the science of behavior span many areas including avoidance behavior, coercion and its effects, stimulus control, errorless learning, programmed learning, stimulus equivalence, and single-subject methodology. He was also a great mentor to many and helped shape the discipline we now call behavior analysis. In this memoriam, we briefly highlight his scholarly legacy and share some personal anecdotes.

Bonded surfaces are formed by adhering first nanorods and second nanorods to respective first and second surfaces. The first shell is formed on the first nanorods and the second shell is formed on the second nanorods, wherein at least one of the first nanorods and second nanorods, and the first shell and the second shell are formed of distinct metals. The surfaces are then exposed to at least one condition that causes the distinct metals to form an alloy, such as eutectic alloy having a melti…
