The National Cancer Institute's Radiation Research Program, in collaboration with the Radiosurgery Society, hosted a workshop called Understanding High-Dose, Ultra-High Dose Rate and Spatially Fractionated Radiotherapy on August 20 and 21, 2018 to bring together experts in experimental and clinical experience in these and related fields. Critically, the overall aims were to understand the biological underpinning of these emerging techniques and the technical/physical parameters that must be f…

With aging population and preponderance of severe aortic stenosis occurring in elderly patients, the number of transcatheter aortic valve implantations (TAVI) performed in the elderly are growing. Frailty is common in the elderly and is known to be associated with worse outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the impact of frailty on hospital readmissions rates after TAVI. We used the 2016 Nationwide Readmission Database and categorized patients who underwent TAVI low, intermediate, and high frailty s…

Abstract This study investigates the association between summer high temperature extremes (HTEs) over China and the Pacific meridional mode (PMM) that is characterized by an anomalous north–south sea surface temperature gradient and an anomalous surface circulation over the northeastern subtropical Pacific. It is found that the HTE activities over most parts of southern China (particularly eastern China) are prominently intensified during the positive PMM phase and weakened during the negativ…

The optimal duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) in the era of second-generation drug-eluting stents is a matter of considerable debate with more data suggesting a shorter period of DAPT is feasible. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate DAPT compared with monotherapy with a P2Y12 inhibitor after a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central were searched from inception to October 2019 to identify randomized controlled trials that compared outcome…

Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is associated with an increased risk of thrombotic events. We compared the safety and efficacy of different antithrombotic strategies for HFrEF and sinus rhythm. PubMed and Embase were searched through January 2020 for studies comparing oral anticoagulants versus antiplatelet agents or placebo in HFrEF and sinus rhythm to include in this network meta-analysis. We identified 5 randomized controlled trials with a total of 9,390 patients rando…

Abstract Background Morbidity and mortality from candidemia remain unacceptably high. While infectious disease consultation (IDC) is known to lower the mortality from Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, little is known on the impact of IDC in candidemia. Methods We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study of candidemia patients at a large tertiary care hospital between 2015 and 2019. The crude mortality rate was compared between those with IDC and without IDC. Then, we systematicall…

Many studies demonstrate that marriage protects against risky alcohol use and moderates genetic influences on alcohol outcomes; however, previous work has not considered these effects from a developmental perspective or in high-risk individuals. These represent important gaps, as it cannot be assumed that marriage has uniform effects across development or in high-risk samples. We took a longitudinal developmental approach to examine whether marital status was associated with heavy episodic dr…

Historically, it has been assumed that the Emergency Department (ED) is a place for maximally aggressive care and that Emergency Medicine Providers (EMPs) are biased towards life-prolonging care. However, emphasis on early recognition of code status preferences is increasingly making the ED a venue for code status discussions (CSDs). In 2018, our hospital implemented a policy requiring EMPs to place a code status order (CSO) for all patients admitted through the ED. We hypothesized that if EM…

Gender inequality is a central concept in cross-national feminist criminological literature. There is not a readily agreed-upon operationalization of gender inequality. The variation in the operationalization of gender inequality in cross-national research could be the cause for the inconsistent findings. We explored if the operationalization of gender inequality affects the association of the variables with gender-specific homicide across nations. Utilizing SUR and Wald Tests, our results in…

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL; Leishmania donovani) cases produce interferon-γ and tumour necrosis factor in response to soluble leishmanial antigen (SLA) in whole blood assays. Using transcriptional profiling, we demonstrate the impact of interleukin-10 (IL10), a cytokine implicated in VL, on this response. SLA stimulation identified 28 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), 17/28 in a single network with TNF as hub. SLA plus anti-IL10 produced 454 DEGs, 292 in a single network with TNF, IFNG, …
