Elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) has been associated with worse outcomes in several medical patient populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of increased preoperative RDW and short- and long-term mortality after noncardiac surgery. This investigation was a retrospective cohort study including all patients undergoing noncardiac surgery between 2005 and 2015 at Landspitali-the National University Hospital in Iceland. Patients were separated into five predef…

In recent years, a growing number of studies have attempted to treat social-cognitive impairment within neurocognitive remediation as means of improving outcome in psychotic disorders with promising results. However, the durability of the effects is still under debate and little is known about the long-term efficacy of integrated neuro- and social-cognitive remediation in early psychosis. The purpose of this study was to examine long-term effects of a 12-week integrative cognitive remediation…

The human body is a powerful advertising tool that portrays changing messages according to social trends and expectations. Sport advertisements in particular offer many opportunities to study these changes. The aim of this study was to analyze changes in body image portrayal in printed sports magazine advertisements over the last two decades. We used a purpose-designed observation instrument (OSBI) to analyze 221 body images in sports magazine advertisements from 2008 to 2018. We then perform…

The aim of the study was to assess the potential association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and whole-body bone mineral density (BMD) among 16-year-old adolescents and to study the prevalence of 25(OH)D insufficiency, defined as concentration under 50 nmol/l.A cross-sectional study.Reykjavik, Iceland, latitude 64°08'N. Measurements took place in the Icelandic Heart Association's research lab during April-June 2015.In total, 411 students in Reykjavik, Iceland, were invited to part…

The change in the Curie temperature of single crystalline garnet YFeO (YIG) sample due to lattice damage induced by ion implantation has been investigated in Fe emission Mössbauer Spectroscopy (eMS) following implantation of Mn (T = 1.5 min). The Mössbauer spectra analysis reveal high spin Fe ions substituted on both the octahedral and the tetrahedral sites. Measurements in the temperature range 298 K-798 K show that average values of the magnetic hyperfine field are decreased by the implanta…

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used drugs among cancer patients. Due to conflicting reports on their safety, we aimed to determine whether PPI use is associated with mortality among prostate cancer patients. In this population-based cohort study, we identified incident diagnoses of prostate cancer between 2007 and 2012 (n = 1058). Follow-up was from 12 months after diagnosis until death, emigration or end the of study. Post-diagnosis use was defined as ≥2 filled prescriptions foll…

Transdiagnostic cognitive behaviour therapy (TCBT) is an efficacious treatment for anxiety and depression, but its mechanisms of change remain poorly understood. The current study used thematic framework analysis to analyse how patients, recruited in a recent trial on transdiagnostic group CBT (TGCBT), understood the treatment and its mechanisms.Cross-sectional thematic framework analysis. The sample included 24 participants suffering from anxiety and/or depression, divided into two groups by …

A vast amount of research has been carried out to understand how humans visually search for targets in their environment. However, this research has typically involved search for one unique target among several distractors. Although this line of research has yielded important insights into the basic characteristics of how humans explore their visual environment, this may not be a very realistic model for everyday visual orientation. Recently, researchers have used multi-target displays to ass…

Abstract To evaluate phylogenetic patterns of the distribution and evolution of plant secondary metabolites (PSMs), we selected 8 classes of PSMs and mapped them onto an updated phylogenetic tree including 437 families of seed plants. Significant phylogenetic signal was detected in 17 of the 18 tested seed plant clades for at least one of the 8 PSM classes using the D statistic. Phylogenetic signal, nevertheless, indicated weak clustering of PSMs compared to a random distribution across all s…
