Discovering new deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is currently a great challenge. The reported DUV NLO materials are almost exclusively borates or phosphates. Silicates-the largest constituent of the earth's crust-are excluded owing to their weak second harmonic generation (SHG) response. We report a silicate, Li BaSiO , with edge-sharing LiO -SiO tetrahedra that achieves the balance between a short UV absorption edge, below 190 nm, and a large SHG response, 2.8×KDP. Th…

Focusing on parental communication is a promising way to extend the reach of HIV-related interventions and prevention programs to underserved adolescents and their families in the US. One highly relevant population in need of services is Black males who constitute more than one-third of all new HIV infection cases in the US. We sought to determine whether the family context (i.e., parent support, parent relationships) impacted HIV testing over time. For this study, we used the first and third…

People living with HIV (PLWH) experience greater everyday functioning impairment. We examined frequency and correlates of successful functional aging (SFA) in PLWH. Using gold-standard questionnaires, SFA was defined in 174 HIV+ and 71 HIV- adults as absence of significant everyday cognitive symptoms and declines in instrumental activities of daily living. More HIV- (45%) than HIV+ (18%) adults met SFA criteria (p < 0.01). Depression, cognitive functioning, socioeconomic status, and HIV statu…

This study aimed to identify symptom clusters of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to examine the relationship between symptom clusters and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). It included 154 hospitalized patients with COPD. The majority of the participants (88.6%) were aged 60 years and above, and the numbers of men and women were approximately equal (men: 55.2%). The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS), and the Chinese version of…

Presurgical psychological evaluations (PPEs) are becoming an established component of the surgical process, though methods of conducting PPEs are variable. There is a lack of clarity about the goals of PPEs, the types of information that should be included, and the process for integrating information and making recommendations to the referring physicians/surgeons. This review proposes an empirically supported model for PPEs that is systematic, but flexible enough to be utilized across the bro…

The aim was to evaluate the effects of judo combat on the athletes' postural control (PC) and physiological loading before, during and after a simulated match. Seventeen under-20 regional and national level athletes completed one modified 7-min match. At baseline, during the combat (3rd and 7th minutes) and 2-min post-match centre of pressure (CoP) parameters were assessed. Heart rate (HR), blood lactate (BLa) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and local RPE (LRPE) were collected. Signifi…

We present a comparison of renal function outcomes during HTAR with the use of a new hybrid vascular graft (GHVG) or standard graft. It is a multicenter, retrospective, observational study. Between January 2015 and March 2019, 36 patients were treated with HTAR. We compared HTAR performed with the use of the GHVG and with the use of standard bypass graft. Primary outcome measures were hospital mortality, acute kidney injury (AKI) at 30 days and GHVG patency.Mean GHVG ischemia time was signific…

Almost half the constitutional court judges worldwide are selected by a mixed selection system, whereby a specific number of judges are selected by different government institutions. What are the implications of this selection method and its variations for judges’ individual choices on constitutional review cases? An examination of vote choice on the Chilean and Colombian constitutional courts indicates that judges’ decisions to strike down laws are explained more by their and other colleague…

The explosion of Big Data and analytic tools in recent years has brought new opportunities to the field of foresight. Big Data and improved analytics capabilities can expand the knowledge base and act as a corrective to our cognitive biases. Moreover, several data mining and machine learning techniques that increase performance for businesses can be applied in foresight to help researchers discover patterns that may be early signals of change and correct our misperception of patterns where th…
