As an emerging environmental pollutant, microplastics (MPs) are increasingly viewed as a serious health concern to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. However, previous toxicological studies examining MPs on freshwater and terrestrial organisms provide contradictory results, possibly due to few investigations at environmentally relevant concentrations. Here, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a model organisms with both aquatic and terrestrial free-living forms, was employed to…

We herein report a general organocatalytic enantioselective strategy for the construction of highly strained spiro[2,3]hexane skeletons from methylenecyclopropanes and a broad selection of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes. The reaction proceeds through a Michael addition followed by ring expansion of methylenecyclopropanes and nucleophilic attack of an enamine to realize the construction of spiro[2,3]hexanes. Key to the success of this approach are the utilization of an electron-deficient difluoro-s…

The future of connected health care will involve the collection of patient data or enhancement of clinician workflows through various biosensors and displays found on wearable electronic devices, many of which are marketed directly to consumers. The adoption of wearables in health care is being driven by efforts to reduce health care costs, improve care quality, and increase clinician efficiency. Wearables have significant potential to achieve these goals but are currently limited by lack of …

Similarity within non-linear geophysical processes under different space and time has been investigated in literature to understand and model the sophisticated nature of these processes. This study deals with the self-similarity of the governing processes of fate and transport of contaminants in groundwater, which include advection, dispersion, sorption, and degradation, either by chemical reaction or microbiological interaction. As such, self-similarity conditions of three-dimensional advect…

The impact of splenectomy on venous thrombosis (VTE), abdominal thrombosis (abVTE) and sepsis in autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is unclear.Using the California Discharge Dataset 1991-2014, 4756 AIHA patients were identified. Cumulative incidences (CI) of VTE, abVTE, and sepsis were determined in patients with and without splenectomy. Using propensity score matching adjusted for competing risk of death, the association between VTE, abVTE and sepsis with splenectomy was determined. In those …

This review aims to assemble many years of research and clinical experience in the fields of neurodevelopment and neuroscience to present an up-to-date understanding of the clinical presentation, molecular and brain pathology associated with Fragile X syndrome, a neurodevelopmental condition that develops with the full mutation of the FMR1 gene, located in the q27.3 loci of the X chromosome, and Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome a neurodegenerative disease experienced by aging premu…

This Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) grant will advance understanding and evaluate the application of several adaptive and energy-efficient soil penetration processes to inspire a new paradigm for design and construction of civil infrastructure. Current and future environmental and economic challenges, including the continued growing population and the depletion of natural resources, create a strong demand for sustainable and adaptive infrastructure. Many aspects of our infrastructu…

Yasser al-Manawahly is an Egyptian musician and song writer whose debut was in the wake of the January 2011 uprising. Although many of these ‘voices of the new revolution’ have become silent since the 2013 coup, some are still actively trying to maintain the revolution’s goals. In 2014, al-Manawahly released a music video, ‘Ahy Rig’it Rima’ critiquing the coup, which went viral at a time when freedoms were severely curtailed. ‘Rima’ was followed by a long hiatus until the release of ‘Tili’t o…

Prenatal folate and vitamin B12 status have been linked to child neuropsychological development, but less is known about maternal genetic influences on this association. We conducted an exploratory longitudinal study of 181 mother–child pairs to assess whether maternal MTHFR 677C>T genotype modifies the association between maternal plasma folate and vitamin B12 in the first trimester of pregnancy and child neuropsychological development. Maternal plasma folate and vitamin B12 were determined …
