Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are more prevalent among HIV-infected subjects. We examined the associations between carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT), conventional CVD risk factors, and HIV-related risk factors among Hispanics with HIV infection. This cross-sectional study involved 96 consecutive HIV patients on stable antiretroviral therapy and without history of CVD in a university-based outpatient clinic who underwent carotid ultrasound evaluation. Increased CIMT was defined as c…

Despite the advances in the treatment and management, esophageal cancers continue to carry a dismal prognosis with an overall 5-year survival rate ranging from 15 to 25%. Delayed onset of symptoms and lack of effective screening methods and guidelines for diagnosis of the early disease contribute to the high mortality rate of esophageal cancers. Detection of esophageal cancer at their early stage is really a challenge for physicians including primary care physicians, gastroenterologists and o…

Visible genital warts are caused by the nearly 100 recognized strains of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV infections caused by high-risk strains are associated with significant morbidity and mortality rates. Genital warts are diagnosed by visual inspection and treated by three major methods: topical agents, systemic agents, and surgical therapies. CO laser ablation is the best treatment option for warts that present as refractory, thick, extensive lesions. CO ablation offers benefits such as a…

Increasing research reports neurological manifestations of COVID-19 patients. SARS-CoV-2 shares homology with other human coronaviruses that have also had nervous system involvement. To review the neurological aspects of SARS-cov2 and other coronavirus, including transmission pathways, mechanisms of invasion into the nervous system, and mechanisms of neurological disease. We conducted a systematic review of articles in PubMed, SCOPUS and EMBASE data bases. Reviewed evidence is presented in sect…

During the past two decades, three novel coronaviruses (CoVs) have emerged to cause international human epidemics with severe morbidity. CoVs have also emerged to cause severe epidemics in animals. A better understanding of the natural hosts and genetic diversity of CoVs are needed to help mitigate these threats. To design and evaluate a molecular diagnostic tool for detection and identification of all currently recognized and potentially future emergent CoVs from the Orthocoronavirinae subfam…

To review currently available data on the transfer of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in the breastmilk of women receiving treatment for neurologic and non-neurologic diseases. We systematically searched the medical literature for studies referring to 19 selected mAb therapies frequently used in neurologic conditions and "breastmilk," "breast milk," "breastfeeding," or "lactation." From an initial list of 288 unique references, 29 distinct full-text studies met the eligibility criteria. One addit…

This multi-institutional study retrospectively evaluated clinicopathologic and genetic characteristics in 351 patients with core-binding-factor acute myeloid leukemia (CBF-AML), comprising 69 therapy-related (t-CBF-AML) and 282 de novo cases. The T-CBF-AML patients were older, had lower WBC counts, and slightly higher hemoglobin than patients with de novo disease. Secondary cytogenetic abnormalities were more frequent in patients with de novo disease than t-CBF-AML (57.1% vs 41.1%, P = .026).…

The role of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in the management of liver metastasis is increasing, using ablative doses with the goal of local control and ultimately improving survival. The aim of this study is to evaluate our initial results regarding local control, overall survival and toxicity in patients with liver metastases treated with this technique, due to the lack of evidence reported in Latin America. We performed a retrospective chart review from November 2012 to June 2018…
