Polyamines such as spermidine and spermine are found in nearly all cells, at concentrations ranging up to 0.5 mM. These cations are endogenous regulators of cellular K+ efflux, binding tightly in the pores of inwardly rectifying K+ (Kir) channels in a voltage-dependent manner. Although the voltage dependence of Kir channel polyamine blockade is thought to arise at least partially from the energetically coupled movements of polyamine and K+ ions through the pore, the nature of physical interac…

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the root cause of the COVID-19 disease that has caused many deaths in the US and millions of infections worldwide. It is expected to infect many more and is feared to inflict a higher death toll, requiring immediate research efforts to understand its genome biology and evolution. Experimental laboratories have quickly assembled tens of thousands of CoV-2 genomes to characterize its variation and to track the spread of COVID-19. N…

The collection of papers represented in the Integrative Research Review responds to the question: How can we study children’s/youth’s out of school experiences to inform classroom practices? Using a variety of lenses to address the question, the authors consider how to understand, respond to, and serve children and youth in a variety of contexts. Duke explores a quasi-experimental design showing the potential impact on student achievement and motivation in schools that incorporate literacy pr…

There are many treatments for neck laxity and fullness, both invasive and noninvasive. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of combined infrared, radiofrequency, mechanical massage, and suction therapy in performing contour changes in the submental and lateral neck regions. This was a single-center, prospective cohort study in which 30 patients were treated with a session of combined infrared, radiofrequency, mechanical massage, and suction therapy once a week for 4 wee…

Limited psychometric information is available to guide best practices for measuring youth irritability. This report compares performance of irritability measures using item response theory (IRT). Study 1 used a sample of 482 early adolescents and compared the parent- and youth-report affective reactivity index (ARI) and irritability factors derived from the parent-report Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and clinician-administered Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders (K-SADS). Study 2 combin…

A mobile-platform imaging device uses compression of the target region to generate an image of an object. A tactile sensor has an optical waveguide with a flexible, transparent first layer. Light is directed into the waveguide. Light is scattered out of the first layer when the first layer is deformed. The first layer is deformed by the tactile sensor being pressed against the object, A force sensor detects a force pressing the tactile sensor against the object and outputs corresponding force…

Transitioning from radiology residency to academic faculty presents many challenges. In this review, we discuss the importance of introspection and mentorship to successfully navigate this process. Key points include alignment of goals with those of the institution, formation of a mentorship program, and periodic reassessment of career goals. These tips and tools can help make the transition from residency to academic faculty more seamless.

Those older than 65 years represent the fastest growing demographic in the United States. As such, their care has been emphasized by trauma entities such as the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Unfortunately, much of that focus has been of their care once they reach the hospital with little attention on the access of geriatric trauma patients to trauma centers (TCs). We sought to determine the rate of geriatric undertriage (UT) to TCs within a mature trauma system and hypothe…

We investigated the effects of parental warmth and behavioral control on externalizing and internalizing symptom trajectories from ages 8 to 14 in 1,298 adolescents from 12 cultural groups. We did not find that single universal trajectories characterized adolescent externalizing and internalizing symptoms across cultures, but instead found significant heterogeneity in starting points and rates of change in both externalizing and internalizing symptoms across cultures. Some similarities did em…

Low socioeconomic status (SES) may be associated with earlier pubertal timing and impaired attention and executive function (EF) in youth; however, whether pubertal timing mediates the relation between SES and attention or executive functioning remains unclear. Structural equation models tested concurrent and prospective relations between SES, pubertal timing, and attention and executive functioning measures in a gender and racially diverse sample of adolescents (N = 281, 45.6% male, 50.5% Wh…
