The role of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the etiology of stress-induced synaptic plasticity is yet unknown. We took advantage of a genetically modified mouse (TG) in which IL-6 trans-signaling via the soluble IL-6 receptor was blocked, to determine the role of IL-6 trans-signaling in the effects of a Social Defeat protocol (SD) on synaptic function of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Synaptic function in stress-sensitive (S) and stress-resilient (R) animals was st…

We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV, and th…

Açai (Euterpe oleracea) is a palm plant that is native to South America and produces deep purple berry fruits. Despite açai's popularity as a dietary supplement, little is known about the phenolic composition and antioxidant properties of commercially available açai berry products. Therefore, twenty açai supplements in a variety of forms (e.g., capsule, powder, frozen pulp, and liquid) were analyzed for their total phenolic and anthocyanin contents, individual anthocyanin and other flavonoid …

Pulsatilla decoction (PD) is a classical prescription in traditional Chinese medicine that has therapeutic effects on wetness-heat-induced diarrhea (WHD). To investigate the therapeutic effects of PD in the treatment of WHD and elucidate the potential mechanism, we used a metabolomics strategy on the base of ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q/TOF-MS/MS) and analyzed the serum samples of 32 rats to identify differential metab…

To evaluate safety outcomes from clinical studies of a 12-month contraceptive vaginal system (CVS) releasing an average of segesterone acetate (SA) 150 mcg and ethinyl estradiol (EE) 13 mcg daily. We integrated clinical safety data from nine studies in which women used the CVS for 21 consecutive days and removed it for 7 days of each 28-day cycle. Four studies used the final manufactured CVS, including a 1-year pharmacokinetic study, two 1-year phase 3 trials and a second-year treatment extens…

Research indicates that women are more susceptible to pain than men, but the reason for this difference is unclear. While estrogen and progesterone have been implicated, testosterone has not received adequate consideration in the literature. Additionally, incorporating behavioral expressions, or exaggerations, of pain as an important aspect of pain perception is receiving increasing attention. The current study examined the role of testosterone in female pain expression and perception via the…

Investigations of behavioral lateralization in nonhuman primates yield important insights into brain-behavior relationships. In turn, they provide clues about both proximal and distal factors that shape the development and expression of association between motor asymmetries and underlying neural substrates. Nonhuman primates afford unique comparative opportunities to evaluate potential routes for the evolution of handedness, as well as to uncover relationships between behavioral lateralizatio…

Guiding undergraduates through the ecological research process can be incredibly rewarding and present opportunities to break down barriers to inclusion and diversity in scientific disciplines. At the same time, mentoring undergraduate researchers is a complicated process that requires time and flexibility. While many academics receive extensive guidance on how to be successful in research endeavors, we pay much less attention to training in mentorship and working collaboratively with undergr…

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the compression-resistant collagen-based cross-linked matrix for augmentation of maxillary and mandibular soft tissue defects in an animal model.Six rhesus macaque monkeys were subjected to soft tissue grafting in 4 sites intraorally; the anterior maxilla was subjected to hard and soft tissue grafting with implant placement. Each site was randomly assigned 1 of 3 treatments: a compressive-resistant collagen matrix mem…

The validity of the classification of non-affective and affective psychoses as distinct entities has been disputed, but, despite calls for alternative approaches to defining psychosis syndromes, there is a dearth of empirical efforts to identify transdiagnostic phenotypes of psychosis. We aimed to investigate the validity and utility of general and specific symptom dimensions of psychosis cutting across schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar I disorder with psychosis. Multidimens…
