The question “will teachers shoot?” is a neglected issue central to the discussions of how to make our schools safer. Arming faculty may seem like a cheap solution, but it is one that needs refinement and a deeper understanding. What if research shows that most faculty will not shoot no matter the threat or that only certain people will under certain circumstances? This of course says nothing about their level of expertise or non-existent predictions about positive and negative outcomes. Teac…

Graduates from the pediatric degree option program (PDOP) were tracked to identify confidence with pediatric pharmacotherapy and categorize initial employment following graduation. The PDOP was established in 2011 and requires 16 credits of pediatric-focused didactic coursework and advanced pharmacy practice experiences. Thirty PDOP graduates completed a 30-item questionnaire to assess confidence in pediatric pharmacotherapy knowledge and skill statements and employment position following grad…

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes code for membrane-embedded proteins that are involved in parasite/pathogen recognition. The link between the MHC and immunity makes these genes important genetic markers to evaluate in systems where infectious disease is associated with population declines. As human impacts on wildlife populations continue to increase, it is also essential to evaluate the role of MHC and immunity in the context of anthropogenic change. Amphibians are an ideal model…

University professors who teach self-care and nonprescription products must decide which products and ingredients to recommend to students. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved many nonprescription ingredients as both safe and effective through the evidence-based FDA Over-the-Counter (OTC) Product Review or New Drug Application (NDA) processes. However, thousands of nonprescription products sold in community pharmacies are of unproven safety and/or efficacy. These include herbs…

Expression of the chemokine receptor chemokine C-X-C motif receptor 4 (CXCR4) plays an important role in cancer metastasis, autoimmune diseases and during stem cell based repair processes after stroke and myocardial infarction. Previously reported positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agents targeting CXCR4 suffer from either high non-specific uptake or only bind to the human form of the receptor. The objective of this study is to develop a high stability copper-64 labelled small molecul…

The purpose of this article is to review the current literature on drug-induced thrombocytosis with the goal of critically assessing causality and providing a comprehensive review of the topic. Thrombopoietic growth factors, such as thrombopoietin-receptor agonists (romiplostim and eltrombopag) and erythropoietin are not included in our review. The literature search included published articles limited to the English language and humans in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. A total of 44 bis-aryl-monocyclic polyamines, monoaryl-monocyclic polyamines and their transition metal complexes were prepared, chemically characterized, and screened in vitro against the promastigotes, axenic amastigotes and intracellular amastigotes in THP1 cells. The IC and/or IC values showed that 10 compounds were similarly active at about 2-fold less potent than known drug pentamidine against promastigotes. The most potent compound had an IC of 2.82 μM (compared to 2.93 μM for pentamid…

To evaluate clinical trials using bumetanide in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) treatment.PubMed and Ovid MEDLINE (1946 to October 2018) were searched using terms bumetanide and autism. Bibliographies were reviewed for other relevant trials.English language, randomized, controlled, clinical trials in humans were evaluated. Three trials met all inclusion criteria.Oral bumetanide was studied in 208 patients, 2 to 18 years old, with ASD. Trials evaluated bumetanide's impact on core behavioral fea…

Medication errors are commonly reported in the pediatric population. While evidence supports the use of e-prescribing to prevent certain errors, prescribing with an electronic health record (EHR) system is not devoid of errors. Furthermore, the majority of EHRs are not equipped with functionalities addressing pediatric needs. This study analyzes three unique EHRs in three pediatric clinics. It describes the functionality of each system and identifies errors found in e-prescribed prescriptions…
