Abstract After many years of sluggish engagement between environmental and feminist communication studies, scholarship in this area is gaining momentum. Ecofeminist theory informs much of the literature at this nexus. Yet what makes ecofeminist communication research timely and uniquely important within the discipline, and what core principles guide or should guide it, have not been adequately addressed. This essay covers these questions and advocates for intersectional ecofeminist communicat…

Improving prenatal diet quality may promote appropriate gestational weight gain (GWG).To examine relationships between dietary quality in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and GWG.Participants' ( = 41) dietary intake was assessed at 14-20 and 35 weeks gestation via the Automated Self-Administered 24-h recall (ASA-24). Kilocalories and Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2015) scores were calculated and associations with GWG were explored via linear regression.Participants reported consuming …

Heat stroke is an emergent condition characterized by hyperthermia (>40 °C/>104 °F) and nervous system dysregulation. There are two primary etiologies: exertional which occurs during physical activity and non-exertional which occurs during extreme heat events without physical exertion. Left untreated, both may lead to significant morbidity, are considered a special circumstance for cardiac arrest, and cause of mortality. We searched Medline, Embase, CINAHL and SPORTDiscus. We used Grading of R…

This study examines how Japanese colonial policies and the foreign exchange market conditioned unskilled Chinese construction workers to dominate the Korean construction labor market during the 1920s and the 1930s. The dominance of Chinese laborers in construction was the main cause of conflicts between the two ethnic groups in colonial Korea that often erupted as a series of anti-Chinese riots, culminating in the 1931 Pyongyang massacre of Chinese immigrants. Past studies simply attributed t…

Accumulated evidence suggests that sporadic cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD) make up more than 95% of total AD patients, and diabetes has been implicated as a strong risk factor for the development of AD. Diabetes shares pathological features of AD, such as impaired insulin signaling, increased oxidative stress, increased amyloid-beta (Aβ) production, tauopathy and cerebrovascular complication. Due to shared pathologies between the two diseases, anti-diabetic drugs may be a suitable therapeu…

Floodplain development, land-use, and flooding on the lower Ohio River are investigated with a 3100-year-long sediment archive from Avery Lake, a swale lake on the Black Bottom floodplain in southern Illinois, US. In all, 12 radiocarbon dates show that Avery Lake formed at 1130 BCE (3100 cal. yr BP), almost 3000 years later than previously thought, indicating that the Black Bottom floodplain is younger and more dynamic than previously estimated. Three subsequent periods of extensive land clea…

Nearly half of all women gain above gestational weight gain (GWG) recommendations. This study assessed the feasibility and efficacy of a pilot behavioral intervention on GWG and physical activity behaviors.Women (n = 45) 14-20 weeks gestation enrolled in a behavioral intervention. Physicians 'prescribed' the intervention to low risk patients. The intervention included self-monitoring, support, and optional walking groups. Process evaluation measures regarding usage and acceptability of study …

Health care providers should counsel pregnant patients on physical activity and nutrition to improve pregnancy outcomes. However, little is known about provider advice on these lifestyle behaviors among women pregnant with twins, a growing population at high risk for pregnancy complications. We examined the prevalence and content of provider advice on physical activity and nutrition among women pregnant with twins.A cross-sectional electronic survey was administered to 276 women who delivered…

Abstract This study presented a three-dimensional (3D) finite element method (FEM) for the numerical analysis of fluid flow in domains containing moving interfaces. This method falls into the general category of Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method; based on a fixed mesh that is locally adapted at the moving interfaces and reverts to its original shape once the moving interfaces go over the elements. The 3D domain occupied by the fluid at any time in the simulation is used as the refere…

Abstract In this study, forced convection enhancement in a square channel by a single stage electrohydrodynamic (EHD) gas pump is numerically examined. The EHD gas pump having three different sizes of grounded electrode configurations: 0.5-inch, 1-inch, and 2-inch wide respectively are investigated for their effectiveness in the enhancement of forced convection and pumping power requirement. The EHD gas pump with 28 emitting electrodes is evaluated for a wide range of operating voltages start…
