Three BODIPYs bearing 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl substituents and a meso-8-aryl group were synthesized and investigated, both experimentally and computationally. The presence of the 1,7-methyl groups and of ortho-substituents on the meso-8-aryl ring prevent free rotation of the meso-8-aryl group, resulting in high fluorescence quantum yields. Substitution at the 2,6-positions of these BODIPYs with chlorine atoms causes pronounced red-shifted absorptions and emissions, and in the case of 2,6-dichloro…

With support from the NSF Improving Undergraduate STEM Education Program: Education and Human Resources (IUSE: EHR), this project aims to serve the national interest by improving physics instruction for life science and pre-health students. These physics courses are generally taught by physics departments. As a result, the courses often seem less relevant to these students unless the instructor and curricular materials explicitly connect to themes in the students' chosen majors. This project …

A mixed-methods approach of sequential explanatory strategy was used to explore experiences of 37 students related to an Early College Academy (ECA) program and their high schools. Data consisted of mixed survey with scaled and open-ended questions followed by in-depth interviews with 12 students. Findings suggested students benefited from the meritocracy of the ECA program leaving many of their peers behind. Several expressed concerns about chaotic high school environments and neoliberal pra…

An efficient synthesis of boron-functionalized cyclic BODIPY-Gly conjugates, using commercially available -protected glycine amino acids and a BF-BODIPY moiety as starting materials, is reported. The existence of two conformers (up and down) is revealed through comprehensive DFT calculations and H and B NMR analyses. The experimental and computational results indicate that all BODIPYs are stable in aqueous solutions at neutral pH and that Fmoc-BODIPY () is more stable than Ac-BODIPY () in the…

The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (MBT) in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). A total of 32 pwMS completed a questionnaire on disease severity, the Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC), and the MBT. The MBT was re-administered 1 week later. The interrater and test-retest reliability of the total MBT and subscales were excellent. The standard error of measurement for the total …
