Many patients with a self-reported penicillin allergy go on to tolerate beta-lactam antibiotics. Allergy specialists may be consulted to determine the nature and extent of the allergy. However, electronic allergy records must be appropriately updated such that recommendations are carried forward. To determine the percentage of patients who have their electronic allergy record updated after an allergy service consult (ASC).This was a retrospective study of patients with at least 1 documented be…

Amid the rapidly evolving global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that has already had profound effects on public health and medical infrastructure globally, many questions remain about its impact on child health. The unique needs of neonates and children, and their role in the spread of the virus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2]) should be included in preparedness and response plans. Fetuses and newborn infants may be uniquely vulnerable to the damagi…

Partial nephrectomy has become the preferred treatment option for small renal masses. In particular, minimally invasive partial nephrectomy (MIPN) using laparoscopic or robotic approaches has shown decreased blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to normal activity compared to open surgery. However, MIPN still carries risk of postoperative complications including hemorrhage and urine leakage. Closure of the renal remnant, often called renorrhaphy, is a critical step to avoid the…

Elevated homocysteine concentrations are a risk factor for stroke. A common genetic polymorphism in methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase ( 677 C→T) results in elevated levels of homocysteine. MTHFR plays a critical role in the synthesis of -adenosylmethionine (SAM), a global methyl donor. Our previous work has demonstrated that mice, which model the polymorphism in humans, are more vulnerable to ischemic damage. The aim of this study was to investigate the cellular mechanisms by which the MTHF…

This is a case of coccidioidomycosis in a dog, examined for vomiting and labored breathing. Physical examination and thoracic and abdominal imaging revealed pleural and peritoneal effusions, both of which exhibited neutrophilic inflammation with a substantial eosinophilic component. The dog had positive IgM and IgG coccidioidomycosis titers at initial evaluation. The eosinophilic component of the inflammation was attributed to coccidioidomycosis. The dog underwent approximately 6 months of fl…

Chemical investigation of cyanobacterial strain HT-58-2, which most closely aligns with the genus , has led to the isolation of two compounds related to tolypodiol. The structures and absolute configuration of 6-deoxytolypodiol () and 11-hydroxytolypodiol () were elucidated by spectroscopic and spectrometric analysis. While tolypodiol previously showed anti-inflammatory activity in a mouse ear edema assay, only reduced thromboxane B and superoxide anion (O) generation from lipopolysaccharide-…

Standard of care treatment for AIH includes prednisone monotherapy or dual therapy prednisone-azathioprine. However, many hepatologists alternatively use azathioprine monotherapy to avoid side effects of long-term corticosteroids. To determine whether azathioprine monotherapy is comparable to dual prednisone-azathioprine for maintenance of remission in AIH.A retrospective chart review of 260 individuals with AIH from a single institution was performed; 45 individuals were included. Exclusion c…

The possible relationship between periodontal disease resulting from the infection of gingival tissue by the Gram-negative bacterium () and the development of neuroinflammation remains under investigation. Recently, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was reported in the human brain, thus suggesting it might activate brain microglia, a cell type participating in neuroinflammation. We tested the hypothesis of whether in vitro exposure to ultrapure LPS may result in classical and alternative activation ph…

Background: Amantadine has been used off-label to improve alertness after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The goal of this study is to assess the mean change at 72 hours and in course of therapy (COT) Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score after amantadine initiation and to correlate the change in GCS score with participation in physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) among patients with TBI receiving amantadine during the first hospitalization. Methods: This single-center, retrospective, c…

Soy isoflavones are known to have beneficial effects on several aspects of gastrointestinal physiological functions (contractility or motility, secretion, morphology, and barrier function). In this review, we discuss the effects of soy isoflavones on the overall gut function and inflammation and assess how these effects might be implicated in the treatment of several gut-related diseases.Soy isoflavones influence several key aspects of gastrointestinal health: improve basal intestinal secreti…
