DEP domain-containing mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR)-interacting protein (DEPTOR) is an important modulator of mTOR, a highly conserved kinase whose hyperactivation is critically involved in a variety of human tumors. The role of DEPTOR playing in pituitary adenoma (PA) is largely unknown. Here, we reported that DEPTOR was downregulated in PA tissues, especially dopamine-resistant prolactinomas. Consistently, overexpression of DEPTOR inhibited pituitary tumor GH3 and MMQ cells prolife…

Alternative polyadenylation (APA) is now widely recognized to regulate gene expression. APA is an RNA-processing mechanism that generates distinct 3' termini on mRNAs, producing mRNA isoforms. Different factors influence the initiation and development of this process. CFIm25 (among others) is a cleavage and polyadenylation factor that plays a key role in the regulation of APA. Shortening of the 3'UTRs on mRNAs leads to enhanced cellular proliferation and tumorigenicity. One reason may be the …

Patients with deep brain stimulation devices highly benefit from postoperative MRI exams, however MRI is not readily accessible to these patients due to safety risks associated with RF heating of the implants. Recently we introduced a patient-adjustable reconfigurable coil technology that substantially reduced local SAR at tips of single isolated DBS leads during MRI at 1.5 T in 9 realistic patient models. This contribution extends our work to higher fields by demonstrating the feasibility of…

Osteoblastoma is a rare, benign primary tumor of bone, accounting for < 1% of all bone tumors. We report the case of a 27-year-old female who developed pain and swelling five and a half years after a clavicular fracture and was subsequently found to have an osteoblastoma arising at the fracture site. This is the first reported case of an osteoblastoma developing after a fracture, although osteoid osteomas, which are histologically indistinguishable from osteoblastomas, have been reported at p…

We have designed and characterized an injectable, electrostatically bonded, in situ-forming hydrogel system consisting of a cationic polyelectrolyte [(methoxy)polyethylene glycol-b-(poly(ε-caprolactone)-ran-poly(L-lactic acid)] (MP) copolymer derivatized with an amine group (MP-NH) and anionic BMP2. To the best of our knowledge, there have been hardly any studies that have investigated electrostatically bonded, in situ-forming hydrogel systems consisting of MP-NH and BMP2, with respect to how…

Chair of the Department of Surgery, sometimes known as the Chief, holds a title that has significant historical connotations. Our goal was to assess a group of objectively measurable characteristics that unify these individuals as a group.Utilizing publicly available data for all US teaching hospitals, demographic information was accumulated for the named chiefs/chairs of surgery. Information collected included location of their program, their medical/surgical training history, their surgical…

Interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as painful bladder syndrome, is a debilitating chronic condition with many patients failing to respond to current treatment options. Rapid clearance, mucosal coating, and tight epithelium create strong natural barriers that reduce the effectiveness of many pharmacological interventions in the bladder. Intravesical drug delivery (IDD) is the administration of therapeutic compounds or devices to the urinary bladder via a urethral catheter. Previous work in…

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), defined by fatty infiltration of the liver in the absence of excess alcohol consumption, affects an estimated 30% of adults in the United States. A proportion of people with NAFLD will develop progressive, inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to liver cirrhosis and liver failure. NAFLD is expected to be the most common indication for liver transplantation by the year 2020. We hypothesize that among adults with NAFLD, as…

PrEP's potential benefit for men who have sex with men (MSM) who use stimulants may be limited by adherence or prescriber willingness to recommend PrEP due to concerns of non-compliance. Using data from PATH-PrEP, a 48-week study evaluating PrEP for MSM in Los Angeles, we modeled an interaction between stimulant use and condomless sex with multiple partners (CAS-MP) on prevention-effective dried blood spot tenofovir-diphosphate concentrations. At week 4, participants reporting stimulant use a…

The ongoing myelination of white-matter fiber bundles plays a significant role in brain development. However, reliable and consistent identification of these bundles from infant brain MRIs is often challenging due to inherently low diffusion anisotropy, as well as motion and other artifacts. In this paper we introduce a new tool for automated probabilistic tractography specifically designed for newborn infants. Our tool incorporates prior information about the anatomical neighborhood of white…
