The present study characterizes the dependence of microplastic consumption and excretion on particle size and body shape of fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) over time that has not been studied. Specifically, the study is to answer four important questions: 1) how do P. promelas consume microplastic particles at different size ranges over time? 2) how long does it take for P. promelas to excrete microplastic particles after consumption? 3) do P. promelas reconsume microplastic particles af…

As vertebrates moved into new ecological spaces the skull diversified in size, shape, and became adorned with ornaments and weapons. It is no surprise, therefore, that the skull has fascinated researchers across the entirety of Biology over the past century. In more recent decades, understanding the developmental bases of craniofacial diversity has been a major goal of Evolutionary-developmental biology. However, a paucity of experimental systems among amniotes ? reptiles, birds, and mammals …

Pressure injuries/ulcers are frequent complications in elderly, paraplegic, and quadriplegic patients, which account for considerable cost to the international health care economy and remain refractory to current treatment options. Autologous or allogeneic adult stromal/stem cells represent an alternative therapeutic approach. The current study extends prior findings by exploring the safety and efficacy of human adipose-derived stromal/stem cell (ASC) therapy in an established immunocompetent…

Although rituximab-based high-dose therapy is frequently used in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients undergoing autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (auto-HCT), data supporting the benefits are not available. Herein, we report the impact of rituximab-based conditioning on auto-HCT outcomes in patients who have DLBCL.Using the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) registry, 862 adult DLBCL patients undergoing auto-HCT between 2003 and 2017 u…

Hypertension is a complication of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in adults. A correlation between OSAS and elevated blood pressure (BP) is suggested in children but its pathogenesis remains unclear. Our aim was to study the effects of sleep and sleep apnea on BP and sympathetic nervous system activation as measured by serum cortisol and urinary catecholamines. We hypothesized that children with OSAS would have higher BP, urinary catecholamines, and cortisol compared to controls. We me…

Coronaviruses (CoVs) are common human and animal pathogens that can transmit zoonotically and cause severe respiratory disease syndromes. CoV infection requires spike proteins, which bind viruses to host cell receptors and catalyze virus-cell membrane fusion. Several CoV strains have spike proteins with two receptor-binding domains, an S1A that engages host sialic acids and an S1B that recognizes host transmembrane proteins. As this bivalent binding may enable broad zoonotic CoV infection, we…

Classifying whether concepts in an unstructured clinical text are negated is an important unsolved task. New domain adaptation and transfer learning methods can potentially address this issue. We examine neural unsupervised domain adaptation methods, introducing a novel combination of domain adaptation with transformer-based transfer learning methods to improve negation detection. We also want to better understand the interaction between the widely used bidirectional encoder representations fr…

The past decade has witnessed numerous advances in colorectal surgery secondary to minimally invasive surgery, evidence-based enhanced recovery programs, and a growing emphasis on patient-centered outcomes. The purpose of this study is to benchmark outcomes and experiences of patients undergoing colorectal surgery at a tertiary Veterans Affairs Medical Center for a 10-year period. Veterans who underwent nonemergent colorectal procedures between 2008 and 2018 were identified using targeted Cur…

Although career development prominently features intertemporal choices (in which choice consequences play out over time), little is known about how an individual should navigate intertemporal career choices to obtain desirable career outcomes. Using a sample of U.S. workers ( = 340), the current study examined the structural predictions of two general intertemporal choice orientations (i.e., time discounting and delay of gratification) and one career-specific intertemporal choice orientation …

Progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is accompanied by worsening of symptoms, exercise capacity and health-related quality of life. However, the utility of patient-reported outcomes as predictors of mortality remains uncertain. To assess whether patient-reported outcomes are independently associated with mortality beyond clinical risk factors in patients with IPF.Data from the observational IPF-PRO Registry were used to examine associations between patient-reported outcomes at en…
