We examined knowledge of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), resources, and research opportunities among older African American (AA) and Caucasian caregivers. A mixed methods design integrated qualitative (focus group) and quantitative (survey) data from Northwest Louisiana. Eight focus groups (59 adults, 92% female, 78% AA, 25% rural) revealed limited knowledge. Quantitative findings from 117 ADRD caregivers (83% female, 72% AA, 30% limited heath literacy, 27% low income) indic…

This cross-sectional analysis of the New Orleans Alcohol Use in HIV (NOAH) study assesses whether current and lifetime alcohol use in people living with HIV (PLWH) are associated with greater liver disease and how hepatitis C-viral (HCV) co-infection (HIV/HCV+) modifies the association.Alcohol use was measured by Lifetime Drinking History (LDH), a 30-day Timeline Followback calendar, the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test, and phosphatidylethanol. Liver disease was estimated by alanine …

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is constitutively activated and overexpressed in many cancers, including non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We recently developed HJC0152 as an orally active STAT3 inhibitor. This study focused on investigating HJC0152's effect and mechanism of action in NSCLC.We analysed cell proliferation by MTT assays, cell migration by wound healing and transwell assays, protein levels by Western blot, and apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (R…

The demand for body contouring surgery continues to rise. The inclusion of the superficial fascial system (SFS) during closure of such procedures has been shown to improve outcomes; however, currently reported wound complication rates remain high. The authors assess whether decreased quantities of SFS are associated with wound complications in these patients.A retrospective study of patients undergoing body contouring surgery was performed. Preoperatively, ultrasound images were obtained of t…

Abdominal aortic injury secondary to blunt abdominal aortic trauma (BAAI) is a rare in children but frequently occurs in association with other injuries, including bowel injury and vertebral fracture. We present a case of a 14-year-old boy who sustained a partial transection of the infrarenal aorta with a lumbar chance fracture and small bowel injury following a motor vehicle accident. Repair was performed with bowel resection followed by Dacron graft interposition. We reviewed the literature…

Precise flap planning and perforator selection are paramount for successful perforator flap surgery. Portable color-flow ultrasound (PCFU) is a convenient, low-cost, easily accessible imaging modality that is pivotal in the planning of perforator flaps where anatomic variability is the rule.Perforator mapping was performed using an L12-4 linear-array ultrasound probe connected to an Android tablet. Images were obtained with the Lumify app (Philips Lumify, usa.philips.com). Perforator characte…

Cochlear obliteration after vestibular schwannoma excision has been noted, with implications on cochlear implantation. Early postoperative cochlear enhancement with gadolinium on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has also been observed. Timing of enhancement and association with obliteration is described here.Retrospective case review.Tertiary referral center, ambulatory.Patients receiving vestibular schwannoma excision surgery by the senior author performed at one institution between January …

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of fatality and disability worldwide regardless of gender. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in population across different regions. According to epidemiological studies, CVD risk markers in childhood obesity are one of the significant risk factors for adulthood CVD, but have received disproportionally little attention. This review has examined the evidence for the presence of traditional cardiac biomarkers (nonspecific; lactate dehydro…

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a well-known procedure with both diagnostic and therapeutic utilities in managing pancreaticobiliary conditions. With the advancements of endoscopic techniques, ERCP has become a relatively safe and effective procedure. However, as ERCP is increasingly being utilized for different advanced techniques, newer complications have been noticed. Post-ERCP complications are known, and mostly include pancreatitis, infection, hemorrhage, and per…
