To identify variables that may contribute to delayed wound healing times in pediatric patients with tracheostomy wounds.Researchers identified 134 charts spanning January 2013 to June 2017; 95 charts met the inclusion criteria. The study examined Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) scores, pressure injury staging, and albumin levels.Arkansas Children's Hospital.Patients (birth to 18 years) who developed or were admitted with a wound caused by a tracheostomy device.Time in days to wound cl…

This pilot study examined how exemestane (an aromatase inhibitor [AI]) affected osteoprotegerin (OPG) urine concentrations in postmenopausal women. Exemestane (25 mg, single dose) was given to 14 disease-free women past menopause in this nonrandomized, open-label study. Before dosing, urine specimens were gathered. Three days later, these women returned to provide urine specimens for pharmacokinetic (measurement of major parent drug and enzymatic product) and pharmacodynamic (profiling of OPG…

This chapter proposes the use of a two-pronged framework to reinforce, support, and extend learning far beyond the classroom. This approach uses a community of practice (CoP) in conjunction with an online resource tool called an Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS). The CoP begins in the classroom, whether physical or online, during higher education or training and is intended to continue throughout the person's working career. The EPSS, an online data storehouse of sorts, also provid…

The 2018-2019 Professional Affairs Committee examined the potential roles and needs of clinical educators (faculty and preceptors) in leading transformation in pharmacy practice. The committee was charged to (1) discuss the potential roles and responsibilities of faculty and preceptors leading transformation and enhanced patient care services in pharmacy practice; (2) describe factors, including clinician well-being and resilience, which may influence faculty and preceptor involvement in prac…

UGT2B17 gene deletion (UGT2B17*2) has been reported to affect bone health as well as the pharmacokinetics of aromatase inhibitor (AI) drugs such as exemestane. The goal of this study was to assess associations between UGT2B17 gene deletion and bone health prior to and after 24 months of AI treatment in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor positive (HR+) breast cancer.Bone health in women with HR+ breast cancer enrolled on the prospective randomized Exemestane and Letrozole Pharmacogenet…

This chapter examines the relationship between collaboration and learning. Next, attention will be turned to how collaboration was transitioned from the classroom to the online environment, as e-collaboration. The case will be made that e-collaboration has provided solutions to at least four major areas of concern in e-learning: providing sufficient interaction for the learner, creating instructor and peer telepresence for learners, stimulating learning motivation online, and providing a vehi…

Advances in genomic technologies have led to a wealth of information identifying genetic polymorphisms in membrane transporters, specifically how these polymorphisms affect drug disposition and response. This review describes the current perspective of the International Transporter Consortium (ITC) on clinically important polymorphisms in membrane transporters. ITC suggests that, in addition to previously recommended polymorphisms in ABCG2 (BCRP) and SLCO1B1 (OATP1B1), polymorphisms in the em…

In this full research paper, we bring into focus the interplay of conformity to masculine social norms and demographic characteristics (i.e., gender, race/ethnicity, institutional settings) among undergraduate engineering students in the United States. We approached this study with an exploratory, non-experimental design that involved examining patterns of relationship between the conformity to masculine social norms and demographic characteristics of respondents. Our data were obtained from …

Service-learning (SL) requires practitioners and researchers to build long-term relationships with institutions of higher education, community organizations, and funding agencies. This often requires managing complex needs and developing the skill set to address issues as they arise. This session intends to bring dialog to the integration of service learning in courses, developing partnerships, conducting research and securing funding. The panel will draw upon personal experiences as service-…
