We conducted a field test at a potential Mars analog site to provide insight into planning for future robotic missions such as Mars 2020, where science operations must facilitate efficient choice of biologically relevant sampling locations. We compared two data acquisition and decision-making protocols currently used by Mars Science Laboratory: (1) a linear approach, where sites are examined as they are encountered and (2) a walkabout approach, in which the field site is first examined with r…

The success of monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapeutics have increased pharmaceutical investment in mAb production, which has led to a greater demand of technologies to efficiently characterize these biotherapeutics. The large size and heterogeneity of mAbs require the measurement of multiple critical quality attributes (CQAs) during production. The current workflow to measure CQAs of antibodies involves multiple one-dimensional liquid chromatography methods, including Protein-A (ProA), ion-exc…

Rapid cold-hardening (RCH) is a type of phenotypic plasticity that promotes a swift improvement of cold tolerance in insects. A brief exposure to mild cold dramatically increases insect survival to a subsequent cold exposure that would be lethal otherwise. In adult male flesh fly, Sarcophaga bullata, as little as 15 min at 5 °C significantly improved organismal survival at -7°C from 0 to 66.7 ± 11.1%. In this study, we investigated whether this RCH response is an aerobic process in S. bullata…

Combretastatin A1 (OXi4503) is a dual-function drug with vascular disrupting and cytotoxic properties that has exhibited single-agent anti-leukemia activity in murine xenograft models of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and in a prior Phase 1A clinical study for relapsed/refractory (R/R) AML. The purpose of the present multicenter Phase 1B study was to define the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and safety profile of OXi4503 and cytarabine (ARA-C) administered in combination (OXA). At four centers, 2…

Mad2 is a central component of the spindle assembly checkpoint required for accurate chromosome segregation. Additionally, in some organisms, Mad2 has roles in preventing mutations and recombination through the DNA damage response. In the fungal pathogen , CaMad2 has previously been shown to be required for accurate chromosome segregation, survival in high levels of hydrogen peroxide, and virulence in a mouse model of infection. In this work, we showed that CaMad2 promotes genome stability th…

This feasibility study evaluated the acceptability, implementability, and preliminary efficacy of a brief purpose renewal intervention (the Compass Course) using a one-group pretest-posttest design. Fifteen women who had completed treatment for early-stage breast cancer enrolled in the study. Twelve completed the eight-session group intervention that was designed to help participants identify daily priorities (actual and aspired) that most align with their personal strengths, values, and sour…

Variation in pollinator effectiveness may contribute to pollen limitation in fragmented plant populations. In plants with multiovulate ovaries, the number of conspecific pollen grains per stigma often predicts seed set and is used to quantify pollinator effectiveness. In the Asteraceae, however, florets are uniovulate, which suggests that the total amount of pollen deposited per floret may not measure pollinator effectiveness. We examined two aspects of pollinator effectiveness-effective poll…

In recent years there has been increasing interest in the use of HILIC separations in two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC), mainly because the selectivity of HILIC separations complement that of reversed-phase separations for a variety of molecules. Historically, the re-equilibration of HILIC phases following gradient elution has been perceived as too slow to be useful in the second dimension of 2D-LC separations in particular. Recent studies of re-equilibration of HILIC phases by Mc…

This article proposes a framework and core content for entrepreneurial finance (EF) that distinguishes EF from corporate finance. The Realms of Entrepreneurial Finance (REF) framework builds on existing literature along with theories and methodologies from psychology and entrepreneurship. This study also offers a set of EF learning goals and objectives as well as suggestions for teaching EF. The REF framework benefits entrepreneurship educators and scholars in furthering the understanding, ma…

Stable carbon isotope geochemistry is a well-established and reliable tool for studying metabolisms of microbial communities in the Precambrian record; however, the isotopic effects of high-temperature alteration from igneous intrusions (i.e., contact metamorphism) have not been thoroughly explored. The Mesoproterozoic (∼1.4 Ga) Middlebrun Bay Member of the Rossport Formation, Sibley Group, in Ontario, Canada, is composed of carbonaceous stromatolites and microbial laminites preserved in an e…
