l-Ascorbate (vitamin C) is ubiquitous in both our diet and the environment. Here we report that H16 ( ATCC 17699) uses l-ascorbate as sole carbon source via a novel catabolic pathway. RNaseq identified eight candidate catabolic genes, sequence similarity networks, and genome neighborhood networks guided predictions for function of the encoded proteins, and the predictions were confirmed by assays and growth phenotypes of gene deletion mutants. l-Ascorbate, a lactone, is oxidized and ring-open…

This paper analyzes Brazil’s 2004–16 business cycle, which subsumes what is now regarded as the nation’s most severe macroeconomic recession in more than a century. During the steep recession, which stretched over more than two years, national production at one point fell 3.8 percent per annum while the unemployment rate rose from 4.6 to as high as 11.9 percent. This study, after delineating its methodology, examines the behavior of different Brazilian macroeconomic aggregates during the cycl…

The accelerated progress of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the nature of its heterogeneous parts cause difficulties in transferring data between different components. These rapid developments make it crucial to investigate new techniques to reduce the size of the data transmitted over the channels. In this paper, we develop an original chain code for compression that is inspired by the concept of biological reproduction. The new chain code is implemented via developing an agent-based modeli…

Abstract The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to explore the experiences and perceived benefits for older adult members who participated in an intergenerational rock band (IGRB) pairing older adults with college students. Participants (n = 29) were first-time older adult IGRB members who completed semi-structured interviews over the course of 5 years. Interviews were completed within 1 week of the conclusion of the semester-long participation in the IGRB. Each interview was di…

Understanding the motivation of adults and children expressions during different sensations as hunger, pain, etc., is not a hard task. This is due to their ability to communicate their feelings using sound expressions that are commonly used among human beings and are easily understood by them. Infants, on the other hand, lack the knowledge to show their feelings, which makes them express themselves through crying and by making facial expressions that can differ depending on the baby’s age or …

This study considers how configurations of leadership practices impact perceptions of implementation during large-scale reform: implementation in the United States of Common Core State Standards. Comments of 951 respondents to a national teacher survey were examined. Analysis revealed the hybrid nature of leadership enactment with a range of leadership participation (RoLP) across hierarchical and heterachical structures.
