With the support from Major Research Instrumentation, the eye-tracking system (SR Research EyeLink 1000 Plus) will be acquired. The project is built upon the interdisciplinary team of one visual cognition researcher and six decision science researchers at Drake University (Des Moines, Iowa). By integrating the well-established techniques in the visual cognition field, the system enables decision science researchers in the team (economics, marketing, accounting, actuarial science, information …

To determine the mechanism of action of third generation methylenecyclopropane nucleoside analogs (MCPNAs), DNA sequencing of HSV-1 isolates resistant to third generation MCPNAs resulted in the discovery of G841S and N815S mutations in HSV-1 UL30. Purified HSV-1 UL30 or HCMV UL54 was then subjected to increasing concentrations of MBX-2168-TP with results demonstrating an IC = ∼200 μM, indicating that MBX-2168-TP does not inhibit the viral DNA polymerase. Further metabolic studies showed the r…

To evaluate the association between psychiatric comorbidities, substance use disorders and heroin overdose-related hospitalizations (HOD). Next, to understand the demographic trend of HOD hospitalizations and comorbidities.Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), we included 27,442,808 child and adolescent hospitalizations, and 1432 inpatients (0.005%) were managed primarily for HOD. The odds ratio (OR) of the association of variables in HOD inpatients were measured using a logistic regre…

The 32nd International Conference on Antiviral Research (ICAR), sponsored by the International Society for Antiviral Research (ISAR) was held in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, on May 12-15, 2019. This report gives an overview of the conference on behalf of the Society. It provides a general review of the meeting and awardees, summarizing the presentations, and their main conclusions from the perspective of researchers active in many different areas of antiviral research and development. As in past…

Our study aimed to compare the demographic characteristics of conduct disorder (CD) inpatients versus other psychiatric inpatients in children and adolescents, and assess the association between conduct disorder patients and the spectrum of substance use disorders (SUD).We included 800,614 psychiatric adolescent (12-18 years) inpatients, and this included 8885 inpatients (1.1%) primarily for conduct disorder in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (2010-2014). ICD-9 codes were used to detect SUD, …

Motile cilia generate directed hydrodynamic flow that is important for the motility of cells and extracellular fluids. To optimize directed hydrodynamic flow, motile cilia are organized and oriented into a polarized array. Basal bodies (BB) nucleate and position motile cilia at the cell cortex. Cytoplasmic BB-associated microtubules are conserved structures that extend from BBs. Using the ciliate, , combined with EM-tomography and light microscopy, we show that BB-appendage microtubules assem…

We introduce a new motif for constructing robust digital logic circuits using input/output chemical reaction networks. These chemical circuits robustly handle adversarial manipulation to their input signals, initial concentrations, rate constants, and measurements. In particular, we show that all Boolean circuits and several sequential circuits enjoy this robustness. Our results complement existing literature in the following three ways: (1) our logic gates read their inputs catalytically whi…

The high costs associated with pharmaceuticals and the accompanying stakeholders are being closely evaluated in the search for solutions. As a major stakeholder in the U.S. pharmaceutical market, the practices of pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) organizations have been under increased scrutiny. Examples of controversial practices have included incentives driving formulary status and prohibiting pharmacists from disclosing information on lower-cost prescription alternatives. Ethical investigatio…

Coronary heart disease (CHD) and heart failure (HF) produce significant morbidity/mortality but identifying new biomarkers could help in the management of each. In this article, we summarize the molecular regulation and biomarker potential of PIGF and sFlt-1 in CHD and HF. PlGF is elevated during ischemia and some studies have shown PlGF, sFlt-1 or PlGF:sFlt-1 ratio, when used in combination with standard biomarkers, strengthens predictions of outcomes. sFlt-1 and PlGF are elevated in HF with…
