Music and language engage the dorsal auditory pathway, linked by the arcuate fasciculus (AF). Sustained practice in these activities can modify brain structure, depending on length of experience but also age of onset (AoO). To study the impact of early experience on brain structure we manually dissected the AF in bilinguals with and without music training (MT) who differed in the AoO of their second language (L2), or MT. We found the usual left-greater-than-right asymmetry in the volume of th…

This paper presents a control strategy for the position and posture control of a planar four-link underactuated manipulator with a passive second link based on a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) model. First, using the differential evolution (DE) optimization algorithm, the target angles of all links are calculated. The third and fourth links are then controlled from their initial angles to zero. Next, the control process is divided into the following two steps: the control objective of…

Depression symptom questionnaires are not for diagnostic classification. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores ≥10 are nonetheless often used to estimate depression prevalence. We compared PHQ-9 ≥10 prevalence to Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (SCID) major depression prevalence and assessed whether an alternative PHQ-9 cutoff could more accurately estimate prevalence.Individual participant data meta-analysis of datasets comparin…

Abstract Many industries, such as human-centric product manufacturing, are calling for mass customization with personalized products. One key enabler of mass customization is 3D printing, which makes flexible design and manufacturing possible. However, the personalized designs bring challenges for the shape matching and analysis, owing to the high complexity and shape variations. Traditional shape matching methods are limited to spatial alignment and finding a transformation matrix for two sh…

A dc-link capacitor voltage balancing topology based on virtual space vector is proposed for traction drive application in the field-weakening region. Four different strategies are implemented and their duty ratios are individually derived. The system is then connected to an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) generally used for traction applications. A comprehensive investigation on the capacitor voltage variation in the field-weakening region is studied and the main contri…

This investigation used self-determination theory to study goal striving in the context of romantic relationships. The study explored how dyadic partners' relationship motivation impacted goal progress, personal well-being, and relationship satisfaction. In addition, the mediating role of relationship goal progress was explored. In a prospective longitudinal study, 153 heterosexual couples rated their own relationship motivation and each reported a relationship goal and a self-oriented goal. G…

Abstract In many situations, consumers use green products without a deliberate choice to use or purchase the product. This research explores how using a green product (e.g., a pair of headphones made from recycled materials) influences the enjoyment of the accompanying consumption experience (e.g., listening to music), even if consumers have not deliberately chosen or purchased the product. Five experiments in actual consumption settings revealed that using a green (vs. conventional) product …

Previous research has shown no significant differences in time required to reach a base when sliding head-first or feet-first, but few studies have compared running through and sliding into first base in baseball players, and none have included softball players. The purpose of the present study was to examine differences in time required to reach first base when running, sliding head-first, and sliding feet-first. Twelve female collegiate softball players (20.0 ± 1.3 years old) and 14 male co…

Let [Formula: see text] be a bounded Lipschitz domain of [Formula: see text]. We consider the complement value problem [Formula: see text] Under mild conditions, we show that there exists a unique bounded continuous weak solution. Moreover, we give an explicit probabilistic representation of the solution. The theory of semi-Dirichlet forms and heat kernel estimates play an important role in our approach.

This study focuses on the integrated performance of anti-vibration (AV) gloves in terms of manual dexterity and distributed palm and fingers' vibration transmissibility. Experiments were designed to measure vibration transmission and manual dexterity performance of 10 different gloves using 15 subjects. The results showed all gloves impeded manual dexterity, while five gloves satisfied the AV glove screening criteria. Glove type yielded a significant effect on manual dexterity ( < 0.001) and …
