We examined the prevalence and repeat offenses of college men, including fraternity men and student athletes, taking advantage of someone sexually while under the influence of alcohol. Preexisting data from the Core Alcohol and Other Drug Survey included a sample of 12,624 college men at 49 community and 4-year colleges. Results provide further evidence that the problem of campus rape is largely one of serial perpetration. More than 87% of alcohol-involved sexual assault was committed by seri…

Mediated communication enabled by information technology has immense potential to positively affect personal health. Although existing theories of technology use and adoption have advanced our understanding of information technology, they do not fully address voluntary adoption in community settings, adoption across the lifespan, and privacy concerns. Drawing on evidence collected during more than five years of field research, we start to address those issues, especially as they pertain to He…

To determine the impact of city-level cannabis decriminalization and medical marijuana laws (MMLs) on fatal traffic crashes in US cities. Using a census of fatal traffic crashes from the 2010 to 2017 Fatality Analysis Reporting System, we examined MMLs and cannabis decriminalization on fatal crashes by age and sex of driver. We used a Poisson difference-in-differences approach, exploiting temporal and geographic variation in marijuana decriminalization laws. Cities experienced a 13% increase …

Research has pointed to the salience of friendships in predicting abuse in adolescent dating relationships. The current study investigates the perpetration of physical and sexual dating abuse as predicted by individual conditional tolerance for dating abuse within the context of friendship behaviors and group characteristics. Using two waves of the National Survey of Teen Relationships and Intimate Violence (STRiV; = 511 daters aged 12-18 years), we investigated the effects of baseline indivi…

Trait mindfulness has been associated with well-being. A key component of trait mindfulness is intentional attention and awareness which is most commonly measured by the Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS). This study investigated the relationship between the MAAS and cardiovascular (HF-HRV, heart rate) reactivity to two laboratory stressors that evoked different patterns of change in heart rate (HR). One stressor (viewing a video of a surgery) evoked HR deceleration while the other …

Evolutionary theory and several lines of evidence suggest that the motive to establish positive relationships with others is stronger in females than males. Accordingly, it was predicted that in young children, girls would be more likely than boys to comply with their mothers’ directives. To test this prediction, the present meta-analysis examined gender differences in compliance to maternal directives in young children (ages 1–7 years) as assessed on structured tasks. The meta-analysis was p…

We build on prior research examining military involvement and criminal involvement by investigating the importance of acquiring the more complete “respectability package” that includes marriage as well as military experience and variations among White and Black respondents. Using data from Waves I and IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health; n = 5,801), analyses use logistic regression models to assess associations of military service, marriage, and rac…

This article introduces Web-ARM, a specialized tool, online available, designed to build quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical models of rhodopsins, a widely spread family of light-responsive proteins. Web-ARM allows the rapidly building of models of rhodopsins with a documented quality and the prediction of trends in UV-vis absorption maximum wavelengths, based on their excitation energies computed at the CASPT2//CASSCF/Amber level of theory. Web-ARM builds upon the recently reported, pyth…

Phytophthora sojae is a major pathogen in cultivated soybeans world-wide. Although incorporating resistance genes has been an effective management tool for soybean breeders, surveys of soybean fields in the Midwest US indicate that some P. sojae strains are capable of overcoming all known resistance genes. While P. sojae is known to have a very narrow host range, it can also infect Lupinus (lupine), varieties of which may provide potential sources for novel resista…

Endoxifen is an effective metabolite of a common chemotherapy agent, tamoxifen. Endoxifen, which is toxic to aquatic animals, has been detected in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent. This research investigates ultraviolet (UV) radiation (253.7 nm) application to degrade (E)- and (Z)-endoxifen in water and wastewater and phototransformation by-products (PBPs) and their toxicity. The effects of light intensity, pH and initial concentrations of (E)- and (Z)-endoxifen on the photodegradat…
